Did you ever hear of a peak named after a reptile’s skin? Here on Xiantouling ridge, overlooking the sea, stands Tai Leng Pei. Tai Leng Pei translates to “big python skin”. Local legend says the mountain’s rough, scaly surface resembles the shed skin of a giant python. While we don’t see any giant pythons today, Tai Leng Pei has witnessed a different kind of movement over millennia. Around 7,000 years ago, the earliest known inhabitants of this area, lived near Tai Leng Pei, at Mirs Bay. They were skilled craftspeople, creating intricate pottery. The Shenzhen Museum showcases examples of their work, including a beautifully polished, textured urn unearthed in Xiantouling. Imagine these early settlers traversing the slopes of Tai Leng Pei. They would have witnessed the same stunning sea views we enjoy today. The area continued to develop. During the Shang dynasty, the population grew substantially, evidenced by a large collection of tombs excavated at Wubeiling. The inhabitants of Tai Leng Pei’s vicinity also demonstrated advanced folk science and technology. They developed cups with spouts to prevent spills, and during the Han dynasty, they even used multiplication tables carved into bricks. Warfare was also a part of life here. History tells us the “Yue people enjoyed war,”. Tai Leng Pei, a silent observer, would have witnessed these conflicts unfold. Shenzhen’s maritime industry also thrived near Tai Leng Pei. The salt industry reached its peak during the Song dynasty. Oyster production, famous in Shajing since the Ming and Qing dynasties, dates back to the Jin dynasty. Tai Leng Pei has seen the rise and fall of empires. It witnessed the Ming and Qing dynasties fortify the coast against pirates with cities like Nantou and Dapeng Fortress. It observed the Hakka people establish their unique castle-style compounds, a testament to their immigrant culture. So as you stand here, at Tai Leng Pei, remember that you are standing on a historical crossroads. This peak, with its intriguing name, has borne witness to thousands of years of human activity, innovation, and resilience.
