Tai Hing Estate

Hidden amongst the bustling energy of Tuen Mun lies Tai Hing Estate. It stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s public housing history. Tai Hing Estate isn’t just any housing estate. It’s the second oldest public housing estate in Tuen Mun. It houses a vibrant community of over 19,000 people within its 8,641 units across seven blocks. Before the towering structures and the constant hum of activity, this land held a different story. Imagine fields stretching towards the coastline of Castle Peak Bay. These farms were the heart of this area before land reclamation transformed the bay into what we now know as Tuen Mun New Town. This transformation paved the way for Tai Hing Estate. The estate’s history intertwines with a significant moment for Hong Kong’s Scouting movement. In 1971, this very ground hosted the Diamond Jubilee Jamboree. Five thousand scouts gathered here, united under the theme of “World Harmony.” However, their celebration met an unexpected challenge. A typhoon struck Hong Kong, forcing the jamboree to be postponed and eventually leading the campers to seek refuge in San Fat Estate. The Hong Kong Post Office even issued a set of three stamps to commemorate this eventful jamboree. Tai Hing Estate is more than just residences. It is a self-contained community with schools, a bustling market, a library, a post office, and even a sports center. Students living here fall under Primary One Admission School Net 70. This net includes numerous aided schools and government schools like Tuen Mun Government Primary School. Two Light Rail stations, Tai Hing North and Tai Hing South, connect the estate to the rest of Tuen Mun and beyond, both falling within Zone 2. A unique feature of the Tai Hing North station is its emergency platform on the reverse loop. This allows westbound Light Rail vehicles to seamlessly switch to eastbound, showcasing a clever solution for efficient transport management. More recently, Tai Hing Estate faced another challenge: the COVID-19 pandemic. In February 2022, Hing Ping House underwent a lockdown, a stark reminder of the unprecedented times. Tai Hing Estate stands as a symbol of resilience. From typhoons to pandemics, it has weathered many storms. It remains a vibrant hub within Tuen Mun, a testament to its enduring spirit.
