Tai Hang Tun is located in Clearwater Bay Country Park. This park protects the rocky peninsula where we stand. It’s a perfect spot for astronomical entertainment.
I’ll tell you a little secret. Sometimes, what seems insignificant on a map turns out to be truly spectacular. That’s the case with the Tai Hang Tun walk to Lung Ha Wan. It’s short, but it packs a punch.
Emerging from a car at Tai Hang Tun, one might spot something large perched on a rock. It might look like an eagle. But look closer. It could be one of the realistic bird kites taking flight.
Tai Hang Tun is known as a popular kite flying site. People come here to fly colorful kites. They fill the sky with vibrant shapes.
The scenery here is no illusion. From Tai Hang Tun Viewing Point, there’s a wonderful vista. You can see Clearwater Bay beaches. The golf course is visible, too. Look out to Tung Lung Island. The deep blue winter sea stretches beyond.
If you want to hike, a direct climb takes you to the summit of Tai Leng Tung. It’s nearly 300m high. The hike is short, only 2.3 kms. It can be arduous on a hot day.
From the top, the view is even more dramatic. Most Sai Kung walks have great sea views. But none are so immediate as this one. You’re right on top of landmarks. You can usually only admire these from a yacht. See Steep Island, Table Island, and Trio Islands. Hear the waves crashing on them.
Tai Hang Tun also offers a chance for stargazing. Hong Kong is a glittering city. But the city lights often obscure the stars. Here, far from Kowloon’s glow, the stars shine brightly. The garden at Tai Hang Tun has grassy slopes. These slopes make for comfortable astronomical entertainment.
As darkness falls, crickets begin their nightly song. Pinpricks of light mark ships at anchor. Overhead, constellations adorn the black skies. These constellations are not visible from the city. In Cantonese, the Milky Way is the Silver River.
Remember that camping is not allowed at Tai Hang Tun. There are no designated campsites in Clearwater Bay Country Park.
Before your hike, you can get supplies at Tai Au Mun. There is also a refreshment kiosk at Tai Hang Tun.
To reach Tai Hang Tun, take bus 91 from MTR Diamond Hill Station. Alternatively, take minibus 103M from MTR Tseung Kwan O Station. Get off at Tai Au Mun. Walk straight ahead, past the Clearwater Bay Country Park sign. Turn left onto Lung Ha Wan Road.
After your visit, walk for 20 minutes along Clear Water Bay Road to return to the bus stop at Tai Au Mun.
