Thousands gathered. The air buzzed with excitement. It was August 28 1960. King Gustaf VI Adolf himself was there. He inaugurated Taby Galopp. This wasn’t just any racetrack. This was Scandinavia’s biggest and best.

Taby Galopp held a special place in Stockholm’s history. For decades it was the heart of Swedish horse racing. It replaced the older Ulriksdal track. Ulriksdal’s lease was short-term. A more permanent solution was needed. This led to the creation of Taby Galopp.

The new track was a marvel. It featured two hurdle courses a training track a dirt track and a grass track. It hosted around 400 races a year. Millions of kronor were awarded in prize money. Taby Galopp became internationally renowned. It hosted the Stockholm Cup International. This prestigious race was known across Europe.

The track also attracted world-class jockeys. Names like Lester Piggott Pat Eddery and Willie Carson raced here. Special events such as the “Grand Hotel All Star Jockey Special” were highlights. These events brought global attention to Taby Galopp. They showcased the track’s significance on the international stage.

But time marched on. The land became desirable for housing. In 2011 the land was sold. The racecourse closed. The final race was held on May 18 2016. It was called Tribute Day. An era had ended. But the legacy of Taby Galopp lives on. Its name is synonymous with a golden age of Swedish horse racing. It remains a vital part of Stockholm’s sporting heritage.
