Atop Ta Shek Shan the wind whispers secrets. It speaks of a lone rock jutting out below the summit. They call it Thunderstruck Rock Lui Ta Shek in Chinese. Legend says lightning has struck it many times. This hill a quiet giant stands slightly north of Tai Tun Shan. From here you can see Sai Kung Bay. You can even spot Highland Reservoir and Tai Po in the distance.

Ta Shek Shan isn’t just a rock. It’s part of a challenging hike. The terrain is difficult. Wear proper hiking boots. Don’t underestimate the climb. It takes three to four hours depending on how many photos you take.

The hike starts at Cheung Shan. It’s a loop you can start and finish at different points. There’s a monument to those who fought the Japanese. The stairs are long but worth it. The views from Cheung Shan are fantastic. Sai Kung Bay unfolds before you.

From Cheung Shan follow the path to a big junction. There are many signs pointing to Pak Tam Chung. Don’t go left. Take the small obscure path straight ahead. This part can be a bit slippery. You’ll need good grip. Look for ribbons trail markers in Hong Kong.

The summit of Ta Shek Shan awaits at 379 meters. The panoramic view is breathtaking. You can even see the Thunderstruck Rock itself. It’s just a short walk down from the main peak. It’s hard to get a good photo without a drone.

The fastest way down is back to the junction. Then take the left towards Pak Tam Chung. There are shortcuts but be careful. The descent is slippery. Take your time. Enjoy the journey. You’ll eventually reach a public bathroom and some stairs. These lead to a BBQ area. Follow the Pak Tam Chung Family Trail. The trail exits at the coach parking lot. It’s a minute from the bus station. You can take the 94 back to Sai Kung Town Center. Your adventure on Ta Shek Shan ends but the memories remain.
