The Sydney Cheil Church’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about people. In 1977 the Uniting Church in Australia was formed. This brought together Methodists Presbyterians and Congregationalists. Demographic shifts in the Concord area led to the decision to repurpose Wesley Church. In September 1991 Sydney Cheil (Korean) Uniting Church found a new home. It became a vibrant center for the growing Korean community in Sydney. This marked a significant change in the church’s identity and congregation. The church previously served a largely Anglo-Australian community. The Korean community now thrives here bringing a new culture and energy.
The church’s organ a magnificent Aeolian instrument from 1915 holds a fascinating history of its own. It wasn’t originally built for this church. This impressive organ started life in a private home in Bellevue Hill. It was later acquired by Mr Westbrook. Eventually it found its way to Wesley Church in 1935. The organbuilder Sid Noad who was also the church organist for many years made modifications to the instrument. The meticulous work of Noad enhanced and preserved this remarkable piece of musical history. Its presence continues to resonate within the walls of Sydney Cheil Uniting Church.
