Ever felt the rumble of a vintage bus engine? Right here stands the Sydney Bus Museum a treasure trove of rolling history. Established in 1986 this not-for-profit organisation is run by over 200 dedicated volunteers. They tirelessly preserve a unique collection of historic buses.

The museum isn’t just a static display. It’s a vibrant hub of activity. Think of it as a living testament to Sydney’s transportation past. More than 80 buses and support vehicles are lovingly restored and maintained. They represent decades of public transport in Sydney and beyond. You’ll find everything from single-deckers to iconic double-deckers. Some even hail from Hong Kong and London adding an international flair to this local gem. The museum isn’t just about preservation either. These beautiful buses regularly appear in film and photoshoots. They even participate in historical events.

The museum’s journey has been as captivating as its collection. It started its life in the former Tempe Bus Depot. However the depot needed to be reopened for the Metrobus operation. So in 2010 the museum moved to its current home in Leichhardt. This involved a temporary closure between 2010 and 2016. The new location at Leichhardt was officially opened in 2016 by then Transport Minister Andrew Constance. A true testament to the dedication and resilience of the museum’s volunteers.

The Sydney Bus Museum is more than just a collection of old buses. It is a testament to the history of transportation in Australia. It’s a vibrant community hub and an invaluable educational resource. So come on in and explore the rich history of Sydney’s streets. Discover the stories etched into every chassis and seat. Each bus is a time capsule waiting to take you on a journey back in time. You might even see one of their legendary double-deckers a symbol of Sydney’s iconic public transport heritage.
