A tragic accident forever marks Sydenham. A train collision in 1953 claimed five lives. This small suburb nestled eight kilometres south of Sydney’s bustling CBD bears the scars of its past. Sydenham’s story isn’t just about trains. It’s about resilience and transformation.

Sydenham grew alongside the Illawarra railway line. It shares a name with a London suburb a similar railway junction point. The Sydenham station opened in 1884 initially called Marrickville. A new line to Bankstown changed its name in 1895. The post office however didn’t receive the name Sydenham until 1964.

Post-World War II immigration shaped Sydenham. Many Italian and Greek families found a home here. Semi-detached houses terraces and apartments sprung up. Industrial areas flourished near Sydenham Station. This created a strong working-class identity.

Sydenham also faced noise pollution from Sydney Airport. The government acquired properties under the flight path. This led to the creation of Sydenham Green a large recreational park. Oversized sculptures of living room furniture now stand. They replace the houses that once stood here. One remaining heritage building a sandstone terrace still stands a quiet witness to change. St Mary’s Church however suffered a suspicious fire and was controversially demolished.

Sydenham is a melting pot of cultures religions and histories. In 2021 only 58.8% of residents were born in Australia. The most common religion was “No Religion” reflecting a changing landscape. The station itself a heritage-listed building stands tall. It is a junction for three train lines. A former tram service once connected Sydenham with neighbouring suburbs.

Sydenham Station boasts an impressive history. It’s undergone significant transformations. The new Sydney Metro now connects to the city centre. A new concourse and platform upgrades reflect Sydenham’s ongoing evolution. Sydenham’s past its railway heritage its diverse population its green spaces and its ongoing development make it a fascinating place. A blend of old and new tragic and triumphant. It is an integral part of Sydney’s story.
