“Another precious and magnificent pearl!” That’s what Prague’s press exclaimed when svatý Gabriel was consecrated. Today, standing before svatý Gabriel, we explore this unique complex. It resides at the end of Kinského Gardens in Smíchov.

Svatý Gabriel began as a Benedictine nunnery. It was the first female convent of the Beuron Congregation in Prague. The years 1888 to 1891 saw its construction in the neo-Romanesque style. Architects Hildebrand de Hemptinne and Ghislain de Béthune designed it.

Baroness Gabriela Sweert-Sporckova generously financed much of the construction. Her contribution helped bring this vision to life. Svatý Gabriel was initially a priory. It gained abbey status in 1893.

The nuns of svatý Gabriel were later compelled to relocate to Austria in 1919. The state then took over the building. Postal organizations, including the Prague Postal Museum, occupied it until 2019. A property development company now owns svatý Gabriel.

The church within svatý Gabriel is officially the Church of the Annunciation. It is popularly known as St. Gabriel’s. Both the monastery and church became cultural monuments in 1964.

Inside the main aisle, eight “carpet” windows catch the eye. The smaller side aisle features two windows. Interestingly, the church lacks a traditional ceiling or vaulting. The roof frame forms the aisle’s top. Artwork from the Beuron Art School adorns the interior. This makes for a truly unique artistic experience.

The tower of svatý Gabriel rises 43 meters. It has three floors. Romanesque windows and dual-windows decorate the top floor. Modest curly friezes appear under the tower cornices. A simple pyramidal roof with skylight windows crowns the tower. A finial and cross top it off.

Svatý Gabriel offers diverse spaces. Breathtaking halls and artistic nooks abound. It hosts events like conferences, fashion shows, and weddings. Filmmakers and art lovers also find it a perfect location.

The neo-Romanesque style is especially charming. The artistic decoration reflects the Beuron school. Its historical spirit creates a unique atmosphere. Svatý Gabriel is truly one of a kind.
