The Svatojánská skala, or St. John’s Rock as it is known in English, stands tall and proud above the village of Svatý Jan pod Skalou. This majestic, ancient rock, a symbol of strength and history, has watched over the village for centuries. Its imposing presence has inspired awe and wonder in all who see it. The word “skala” is Czech for “rock” and the rock itself was named after the hermit Saint John who founded the monastery below in the 9th century.
This rock has a unique history: it is actually a very old hill built from Jurassic limestone and it was once a place of even greater importance. It served as a prehistoric fort, dating back to the late Bronze or early Hallstatt Age. People needed to feel safe from attack and so they built their settlements on high, rocky places, on tops of hills that were difficult to reach and offered defensive advantages.
The Svatojánská skala is a reminder of the long-standing connections between human and nature. It is a place where history, culture, and the natural world all coalesce. We can almost hear the echoes of history as we stand here and look out at the valley. This rock has witnessed it all: the lives of the ancient Celts, the rise and fall of empires, the changing seasons and the passage of time itself. Today, the Svatojánská Skala is a place of peace and tranquility. It is a place where we can escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and connect with something much larger than ourselves.
