Let’s go back in time. Can you imagine this place, the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, built on this site back in the 11th century? You stand now before St. Peter and St. Paul, this stunning neo-Gothic landmark, its twin towers reaching upwards towards the sky. Imagine the first basilica, built by the King Vratislaus II of Bohemia between 1070 and 1080. This original basilica, sadly, fell victim to a fire in 1249. It endured a long and fascinating reconstruction, becoming a Gothic masterpiece and then, in the early 20th century, transforming into the striking neo-Gothic structure that we see today. Notice these intricate stone carvings and the pointed arched windows that let in a flood of sunlight, illuminating the stained glass panels within. The Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul stands not only as a testament to history and faith but also as a work of art in its own right. Imagine life here in this magnificent church centuries ago. The bells would toll across the hill and the people of the Vysehrad fortress would come together to hear the story of their faith. You see above the entrance an impressive stone mosaic that tells the story of faith and history. Can you imagine a life of prayer and community in this church? Today, you can still see the echo of their faith in the beautiful murals and art that decorate the interior.
