Imagine yourself standing before a church, its facade a harmonious blend of Gothic and Baroque architecture. This is svatá Kateřina Alexandrijská, a church with a history as rich and captivating as its design. Built in 1355 by Charles IV, it served as part of an Augustinian convent. It was a testament to the king’s devotion to St. Catherine, a woman renowned for her intelligence and unwavering faith. The church, however, was not spared the ravages of time. During the Hussite Wars, the convent was burned down, and the church suffered significant damage. Only the imposing, octagonal tower survived, a stark reminder of the violent past. The church was subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style, its interior adorned with intricate stuccowork and magnificent frescoes by Václav Vladislav Reiner, depicting scenes from the lives of St. Catherine, St. Augustine, and St. Nicholas of Tolentino.

A glimpse into the church’s past reveals a story of faith, destruction, and resilience. In the 18th century, the convent was dissolved. The building was then repurposed as a facility for the mentally ill. The hospital, now known as the General Faculty Hospital, still occupies the grounds. Today, svatá Kateřina Alexandrijská is under the spiritual care of the Orthodox Church. Sadly, some of its original Baroque decorations have been lost over the years. Regardless, the church continues to be a place of refuge and spiritual contemplation. As you stand before this church, remember the women and men who dedicated their lives to faith and healing. Their legacy lives on within these ancient walls. Look up at the tower; it stands as a silent sentinel, a reminder of Prague’s rich history and its enduring spirit.
