Peeking through the trees, Svartsjö Palace emerges. This Rococo palace tells tales of royalty, imprisonment and restoration. Svartsjö Palace stands in Svartsjö on Färingsö island. It is just outside Stockholm.

Let’s journey back to medieval times. A stone house stood here where Swedish royalty resided. Gustav Vasa and his sons erected a Renaissance palace. Willem Boy partly designed it. The palace was completed in 1580. Sadly it burned down in 1687. Building material was then shipped to Stockholm. It was used to construct the castle Tre Kronor.

The stone foundation remained. You can still see it today. Construction on the current middle section started in 1734. It finished in 1739 by order of Fredrik I. It served as a hunting palace for Queen Ulrika Eleonora. Carl Hårleman created the drawings. Inspired by French palaces, Svartsjö Palace became a model. It was a model for Swedish country mansion architecture.

Carl Fredrik Adelcrantz extended the palace. He added a bell tower. In 1771, Queen Dowager Louisa Ulrika of Prussia received it. It was a residence for her widowhood. After her death in 1782, the palace was abandoned for over a century.

Now imagine a different scene. The year is 1891. Svartsjö Palace transforms into a prison. Prisoners mined granite until 1910. Then farming and logging proved more successful. More violent criminals arrived at Svartsjö Palace. A special closed section was created. It held 337 cells with steel walls.

The prison closed in 1966. The prison walls were torn down. The prison warden’s house remains in the palace gardens. Several prison personnel houses are still nearby.

Years of neglect followed. From 1994 to 2003, the state restored Svartsjö Palace. It cost 36 million SEK. The facade regained its light shade. It resembles French sandstone. The windows are painted in a gold brown oak color. Original wallpaper was not kept. Wallpaper based on nearby Drottningholm Palace was used.

Before you stands a magnificent sight. Svartsjö Palace is a testament to Swedish history. Kings, queens, prisoners all walked this ground. Today, Svartsjö Palace stands restored.
