As you stand here, in front of the sv. Ludmila, you might feel a profound connection to the past. This church isn’t just a place of worship, but a powerful symbol of faith and resilience. It stands tall on the land where this holy woman once lived. The sv. Ludmila, named after this first Czech saint, is a testament to her enduring legacy.

Saint Ludmila, the grandmother of the well-known St. Wenceslaus, was a remarkable woman. Raised as a pagan, she embraced Christianity alongside her husband, Bořivoj I. She made it her mission to spread Christianity in Bohemia, striving to convert her people. Unfortunately, this caused resentment among those who clung to pagan beliefs.

This resentment led to a tragic end for St. Ludmila. She was murdered by her own daughter-in-law, Drahomíra, who plotted her death because she was jealous of Ludmila’s influence and power. Saint Ludmila was strangled with her own veil in the castle of Tetín. But even in her death, she became a powerful symbol of faith and sacrifice for the people of Bohemia.

Her grandson, St. Wenceslaus, carried on her legacy and moved her remains to the Basilica of St. George in Prague Castle. Today you will also find a beautiful statue of St. Ludmila on the Charles Bridge. It shows her teaching her grandson how to read from a book, a testament to her unwavering dedication to education and faith.

The story of St. Ludmila reminds us that even in the face of adversity, faith can endure. Her legacy lives on in this church, a tribute to a woman who fought for her beliefs and made a lasting impact on the history of Bohemia.
