Here stands Sutherland Uniting Church a testament to faith and community. This church has a rich history woven into the very fabric of Sutherland. Let’s journey back in time.

The story of Sutherland Uniting Church begins long before its current name. Methodist services marked the start. They were first held in Lobb Hall on April 26 1903. Reverend Thomas Jenkin led these early gatherings. This occurred near the end of the South Coast Mission program.

The first church building opened its doors on March 4 1905. Mr. Vickery a Member of the Legislative Council played a vital role. He contributed both the land and building costs. Vickery supported the Methodist cause for many years. The Sutherland Circuit was created in 1913. It changed many times over the years.

Tragedy struck on November 2 1935. Fire destroyed the original church building. Yet, the community’s spirit remained unbroken. A new church building was opened on August 11 1936. Mr. George Gilmore did the honors. The foundation stone for the current building was set on May 2 1936 by H G Walker. It reads To the Glory of God.

The Uniting Church emerged from a union of denominations. The first joint service of Methodist and Congregational Churches was held on Christmas morning 1975. Sutherland Uniting Church became a reality on June 22 1977. This marked a significant moment in the church’s history.

Today, Sutherland Uniting Church continues to serve. It stands as a beacon of hope. It welcomes all who seek community. It is a place where faith and history intertwine. It is a testament to the enduring power of unity.
