Did you ever hear of an island with just one resident? That’s Sunshine Island for you. Sunshine Island, also known as Chau Kung To, sits peacefully near Hei Ling Chau in Hong Kong. It’s a small island, only about 0.54 square kilometers. Despite its size, Sunshine Island holds a unique and compelling history. Once a haven for drug rehabilitation, it’s now primarily known for its scenic rocks and abandoned buildings. It’s a fascinating blend of nature’s resilience and the echoes of human endeavor. In the 1950s, a Quaker named Gus Borgeest established a resettlement and rehabilitation center on Sunshine Island. He offered refugees and those struggling with opium addiction a chance to rebuild their lives through farming. The project was remarkably successful. It empowered individuals with land ownership and self-sufficiency, a testament to the transformative power of dignity and hard work. Borgeest’s efforts earned him the Ramon Magsaysay Prize in 1961, often called “Asia’s Nobel Prize”. The legacy of his work continues to inspire drug rehabilitation programs in Hong Kong today. The island’s natural beauty also tells a story. White-bellied sea eagles, displaced by the construction of Hong Kong Disneyland, have found a new home on Sunshine Island. The island is also home to a unique lizard, the Bogadek’s legless lizard. As we reflect on Sunshine Island’s story, it offers a poignant reflection on resilience, both human and natural. It’s a quiet reminder that even in the smallest of places, powerful transformations can occur.
