Beneath the towering skyscrapers of Ikebukuro lies an aquatic escape. It’s the Sunshine Aquarium, a unique oasis in the sky. This isn’t your typical aquarium. Sunshine Aquarium sits atop the World Import Mart Building within Sunshine City.

Opened in 1978, the Sunshine Aquarium offers a captivating exploration of marine life. It has around 550 species and 23000 aquatic animals. Imagine, a world teeming with underwater wonders high above Tokyo’s bustling streets.

Originally known as Sunshine International Aquarium, it underwent a significant renovation. It closed in September 2010 and reopened in August 2011. This transformation enhanced the aquarium.

The Sunshine Aquarium is divided into two main areas. There is a two-story building and the outdoor Marine Garden. The first floor immerses you in the ocean’s cobalt blues. Dimly lit spaces and deep-sea sound effects create an otherworldly atmosphere. You will forget you are in Tokyo.

The second floor shifts to a freshwater theme. Here, turtles and frogs join schools of fish. The diversity of aquatic life is impressive.

The outdoor Marine Garden is where the Sunshine Aquarium truly shines. The Sunshine Aqua Ring is a fully transparent, donut-shaped tank. Sea lions swim overhead. This creates a curious contrast against the city skyline. It’s an experience that sets the Sunshine Aquarium apart. It makes it an oasis in the sky.

“Penguins in the Sky” is another popular exhibit. These charming birds appear to fly over the cityscape in their overhead tanks. It’s a whimsical sight.

Don’t miss the jellyfish area “Kurage Kukan”. It opened in July 2020. It has six immersive jellyfish tanks.

The Sunshine Aquarium is more than just an aquarium. It is an entertainment complex. It is part of Sunshine City. Visitors can explore the Sky Circus observatory or dine at Tully’s Coffee.

Language is no barrier here. Exhibits feature QR codes. Scan them for information in English and other languages.

The Sunshine Aquarium has evolved over the years. It was the first permanent reproduction of a coral reef environment in Japan.

The Sunshine Aquarium continues to captivate visitors. It is a place where you can escape the ordinary. You can discover the extraordinary wonders of the deep.
