High above the bustling city Sunset Peak stands tall. It is the third-highest peak in Hong Kong. The second-highest on Lantau Island. Sunset Peak or Tai Tung Shan meaning Big East Mountain. It rises 869 meters above the Hong Kong Principal Datum. Or 868 meters above mean sea level.

Imagine yourself on the Lantau Trail. This famous trail passes Sunset Peak. You’re surrounded by nature. You can enjoy views of sunrise and sunset. Hikers flock here especially in winter. They come to admire the silvergrass. This grass creates a dramatic scene against the mountain views.

The hike isn’t easy. It requires a good level of fitness. Two popular routes begin at Pak Kung Au and Nam Shan Campsite. The Nam Shan route is often less crowded. It also provides the best sunset views. This makes it very popular with photographers.

Reaching the summit you’ll discover a grassy plateau. Nineteen mysterious stone chalets sit here. These are part of the Lantau Mountain Camp. Built in the 1920s they served as holiday accommodation for missionaries. Food and water had to be carried from Mui Wo. Some huts are still in use today.

From the highest point you can see Pui O Beach and the South China Sea. The silvergrass rustles gently in the breeze. Its golden hue adds a magical touch. This magical area is a popular location for photographs. Especially in winter and during sunset.

Further along the trail you will find Luk Tei Tong. Here a stone watchtower stands tall. Built in the 1940s it protected farmers from pirates. Now a Grade 3 heritage building it stands as a testament to the past.

The trail continues down to Mui Wo. This lively town has many restaurants. It offers many cuisines. It is a popular place for those who want to enjoy a meal after a hike.
