High above us looms the Sulphur Springs Water Tower a Tampa landmark. This isn’t just a water tower. It is a symbol of resilience and a silent witness to Tampa’s vibrant history.
The Sulphur Springs Water Tower stands tall at 214 feet. Its presence is commanding. It is visible from Interstate 275 and much of Sulphur Springs.
Let’s step back to 1927. Josiah S Richardson envisioned a grand resort here. He imagined the Sulphur Springs Hotel and Apartments bustling with tourists. He planned an alligator farm and a luxurious spa. Mave’s Arcade Florida’s first shopping mall would add to the allure.
To power his dream Richardson needed water pressure. Grover Poole constructed this water tower for him. Richardson mortgaged his entire resort to finance it.
The Sulphur Springs Water Tower became a crucial part of the community. It supplied artesian well water to homes and businesses. The tower was more than just a utility. It was a lifeline.
Tragedy struck in 1933. The Tampa Electric Company dam collapsed causing immense damage. Mave’s Arcade was ruined and businesses failed. Richardson lost everything. The Great Depression deepened the despair.
Yet the Sulphur Springs Water Tower endured. From construction until 1971 it operated as a private water company. It piped water directly to customers. The City of Tampa forced it to cease operations in 1971. The city wanted a water utility monopoly.
In 1951 the Tower Drive-In theater opened nearby. People enjoyed movies in the shadow of the Sulphur Springs Water Tower. An aircraft warning light on top of the tower interfered with viewing.
The mid-1980s brought new ideas. Developers considered a condominium complex with the tower as its centerpiece. The project failed. In 1989 the tower was restored. It received a pressure wash and graffiti-proof paint. Sherwin-Williams Co donated the paint. Service Painting Corp donated the labor.
In 2002 a drugstore chain wanted to build on the site. Public outcry stopped the project. The City of Tampa purchased the site. In 2005 lights were installed for nighttime illumination.
The Sulphur Springs Water Tower is an architectural marvel. It is constructed from poured concrete. Railroad rails reinforce the structure. The walls are eight inches thick. The base is buttressed on solid rock. Poole himself said it would be difficult to destroy.
When operational the Sulphur Springs Water Tower stored 200000 gallons of water. The artesian springs nearby supplied the water. The tank occupies the upper quarter of the tower. Seven floors constitute the lower three quarters. An electric passenger elevator was part of the original construction.
Today River Tower Park surrounds the Sulphur Springs Water Tower. The River Walkway connects it to Sulphur Springs Park.
