Suitengu Shrine’s story begins not here in Tokyo but in Kurume Fukuoka. In 1818 a branch of the shrine was established in Edo. The Arima family the heads of the Kurume Domain during the Edo period brought a portion of the divine spirit to their estate. They wanted to continue their worship even while living in Edo. In 1872 the shrine moved to its current location. It has withstood many challenges including the devastating Great Kanto Earthquake.
Suitengu’s fame for blessing safe childbirth is remarkable. It’s tied to a heartwarming tale from the Edo period. Pregnant women used the bell cords from the shrine as belly bands. They believed this practice ensured safe delivery. Word spread the shrine gained popularity. Today you’ll still find the Misuzu Obi a special unbleached sarashi cotton band blessed at the shrine.
But Suitengu isn’t just about safe childbirth. It enshrines four powerful deities. Ame-no-Minakanushi is the ancestor of many gods in Japanese mythology. He is said to bless pregnancy and safe childbirth. Emperor Antoku Kenreimon-in Tokuko and Taira no Tokiko are also enshrined here.
The shrine itself is a beautiful blend of old and new. It was renovated in 2016. The stylish white wood architecture features traditional decorative metal fittings. Yet it also incorporates modern earthquake-absorbing technology. Look closely. The zuishin attendant deity statue is striking. It looks almost like a museum piece.
Explore the grounds. You’ll find the Kodakara-Inu. This adorable bronze statue depicts a mother dog and her puppy. Dogs symbolize safe childbirth given their numerous pups and quick deliveries. Nearby are zodiac stones. It is said stroking your sign brings blessings.
The Komainu guardian lion-dogs are equally captivating. One has its mouth open the other closed representing the breath. They ward off evil. Near the temizuya water purification pavilion a mother kappa statue stands. Sprinkle water on the statue for blessings of safe childbirth and child-rearing.
Finally there is Hosho Benzaiten. This vermillion statue is a power spot for good fortune in academics arts and wealth. The ninth lord of the Arima family prayed to her. He won a noh competition so this Benzaiten is a popular spot.
