She even developed her own dressmaking method called Doreme-shiki. The Sugino Costume Museum opened in 1957 fulfilling her dream. It showcases her personal collection amassed during her travels abroad. Over 1400 items including hats and umbrellas fill this incredible space.
The museum is a treasure trove of history. You’ll find elegant tea gowns. One silk dress is especially stunning with its intricate lace details. Even the mannequins are works of art. Crafted from choseishi paper a unique blend of washi paper cotton and other materials. These painstakingly detailed mannequins are far from the plastic ones we see today. Highly skilled craftsmen created them. They painstakingly fashioned facial expressions and other minute details. This museum isn’t simply about Western fashion. Dior during Sugino’s visit to Europe once stated It will be extremely regrettable if Japanese women discard the kimono to wear Western clothes. I hope Japanese women do not forget the beauty of the kimono. This statement is displayed in the museum highlighting the delicate balance between tradition and innovation. A junihitoe a traditional Japanese court dress is also exhibited. It once belonged to an official who wore it during Emperor Showa’s enthronement ceremony.
