The year is 1954. A wave of unrest washes over Honduras. Workers rise up demanding better lives. This is the birth of STIBYS. Right here in Tegucigalpa.

For decades STIBYS the Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Industria de la Bebida y Similares fought for its members. They battled for better wages. They fought against unfair practices. They fought for the right to organize. It was a long and hard fight. One that shaped the landscape of labor in Honduras.

Before 1954 workers weren’t organized. Laws didn’t allow it. They met in secret. They risked their lives. Many were killed. Many disappeared. Their struggle was fierce. Their determination unyielding.

The 1954 strike was a turning point. It led to the Carta Constitutiva de Garantías del Trabajo. This landmark legislation gave unions legal recognition. STIBYS’s roots lie in these early base unions. Unions formed within Cervecería Hondureña. In cities like Tegucigalpa San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba.

On January 28 1965 STIBYS was officially formed. Representatives from five Honduran cities gathered. They created a powerful union. A union that continues to champion worker rights. A union with a long and rich history.

In 1966 STIBYS signed its first collective bargaining agreement. It was a huge victory. The agreement covered wages working conditions and more. Subsequent agreements built on this foundation. Each one a step forward for workers.

Even today STIBYS continues its fight. In 2024 after a 13-day strike they secured a new three-year agreement. They won significant gains. They insourced jobs protected sales promoters and improved pensions. Their resilience their solidarity their unwavering commitment to fairness. These are the hallmarks of STIBYS.

STIBYS’s story is a testament to the power of collective action. It is a story of courage resilience and unwavering dedication. It is a story that echoes through the streets of Tegucigalpa. A story etched in the very fabric of Honduran history. It’s a reminder that the fight for workers’ rights is a fight worth fighting. A fight STIBYS continues to lead with determination and passion.
