Feel the gentle sway beneath your feet. This is Štvanice footbridge a marvel of modern engineering.

The Štvanice footbridge gracefully spans the Vltava River. It connects Karlín Štvanice Island and Holešovice in Prague. This is Prague’s 20th bridge across the Vltava. Its construction cost a hefty 352 million Czech crowns. It replaced the P7 ferry service.

Construction began in January 2022. It was completed in July 2023. The bridge’s design is minimalist. It uses special technologies and materials. The architects Petr Tej Marek Blank and Jan Mourek created this elegant structure.

Planning for the Štvanice footbridge started way back in 1999. The revitalization of Štvanice Island spurred its creation. A design for a bridge to the western end of the island emerged in 2008. Before the Štvanice footbridge only the Hlávkův Bridge and the Negrelli Viaduct connected the island to the mainland. The viaduct is for trains only. Access is forbidden. The footbridge also improves pedestrian and cyclist connections. It links to the Štvanice footbridge.

The bridge’s construction involved extensive work. A new park was created on Štvanice Island. A wide accessible promenade was built on the Bubenské nábřeží. This improved access to trams. Other improvements included a renovated intersection and tram lines. Even century-old sewers were repaired.

Initially estimated at under 200 million crowns. The final cost was 352 million crowns. Large river stones delayed construction. The ferry service continued until the bridge opened. The bridge underwent rigorous testing. Loads exceeding 70 tons were used.

The Štvanice footbridge officially opened on July 28 2023. Prague’s mayor Bohuslav Svoboda and the first deputy mayor Zdeněk Hřib attended. The bridge is open for pedestrian and cyclist traffic. Organized events are restricted until final approval.

The Štvanice footbridge’s railings feature bronze animal figures. Rabbits are on the Štvanice side referencing past hunts. Bull heads face Holešovice. Goat heads are towards Karlín and Invalidovna. Sculptor Aleš Hvízdal created these. A 185 cm high abstract sculpture Řeka by Jan Hendrych stands near the island’s end. It’s made of the same material as the bridge.

The Štvanice footbridge connects two major Prague cycle routes A1 and A2. Before its opening the ferry provided this link. The bridge is a significant addition to Prague’s infrastructure. It offers stunning views of Prague Castle. The Štvanice footbridge is a triumph of modern design and engineering. It is a testament to the city’s ongoing development.
