Imagine the rhythmic pounding of wooden hammers, transforming raw wool into fine fabrics. The Strunder Mühle adapted to the times, shifting its purpose as needs dictated. It served as a dyeing mill, a fulling mill, and even a tobacco mill. This industrious spirit continued until a fateful night in 1811. Napoleon’s troops, sweeping through Europe, ravaged the Strunder Mühle, leaving it in ruins. But like a phoenix from the ashes, the mill was rebuilt. It resumed its grinding purpose in 1821. Today, the water wheel is gone, replaced by the modern world. Yet, the Strunder Mühle stands as a testament to Cologne’s enduring spirit. It reminds us that even in the face of destruction, resilience and reinvention are always possible.
