Think about Střešovice as Prague’s “local Beverly Hills”. It is a place of quiet streets and green spaces. Some famous residents have lived here including Czech President Václav Havel.

Střešovice appeared between the 10th and 11th centuries. It belonged to the Czech royal family. In 1143, the village was given to the Strahov Monastery. The monastery owned it until the 20th century.

By 1900, Střešovice had 2500 habitats. In 1922, the number of dwellers grew to 3879. There were 254 houses connected to Prague. It became part of the Prague-8 district. Later, it was integrated with other districts like Břevnov and Liboc. In 1960, almost all of Střešovice became part of Prague 6. Finally, in 1990, Střešovice became part of the current Prague 6 administrative district.

Today, Střešovice covers 1.55 square kilometers. In 2021, it had a population of 6592 people. That is a density of 4300 per square kilometer.

While here you can visit Villa Müller. It was designed by functionalist architect Adolf Loos in 1930. Also visit The Church of St Norbert in Romanesque Revival style built in 1890-1891.

The Church of Saint Norbert provided a place of worship. The population was rapidly expanding. The church’s dedication to Saint Norbert is interesting. He was a 12th-century ascetic. He spent most of his life in France. His remains are buried in the nearby Strahov monastery. Zikmund Starý, abbot of Strahov in the 1880s, proposed this new church. Architect František Rožánek designed the cruciform basilica. It captured the prevailing fashion for the medieval. It also expressed a sense of continuity. This linked the Prague chapter of White Friars and the Strahov monastery.

Getting around Střešovice is easy. Tram routes 1 and 2 serve the neighborhood. Bus routes 108, 216 and 180 also run here. The closest metro stations are Hradčanská and Dejvická. Ruzyně International Airport is about 7 kilometers west of Střešovice.

Do not miss the Prague Transport Museum. It is located in tram depot Střešovice. It features over 40 vehicles. These vehicles show the history of Prague public transport. Many other exhibits are also here.

Střešovice is more than just a neighborhood. It is a living piece of Prague’s history. From its royal connections to its modern-day charm, Střešovice offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Prague.
