Imagine stepping into a world where kangaroos hop freely and miniature pigs charm with their snorts. This is Rolf’s Streichelzoo in Cologne. Rolf’s Streichelzoo is more than just a petting zoo. It is a sanctuary for animals in need.
Rolf Effenberger started it all. For years, he ran a volunteer parrot rescue station in Cologne. Over 100 birds found a home there. These included abandoned animals and birds seized by authorities. As time passed, people surrendered other types of animals. This led to the creation of the Streichelzoo.
Today, Rolf’s Streichelzoo is home to diverse animals. You will find ducks, donkeys, chickens, kangaroos and llamas. Nandus, ponies, sheep, pigs, and goats also live here. The Streichelzoo has a mission. It takes in old, abandoned, and unwanted animals. They also care for animals whose owners can no longer care for them. This might be due to financial or age-related reasons. The Streichelzoo provides these animals a home for life. They receive food, shelter and medical care if needed. The goal is to give them a dignified life.
But Rolf’s Streichelzoo is also for people. It offers a chance to connect with animals. Children especially love to pet, feed, and watch them. You can meet Kasimir and Nepomuk, the ponies. Max and his kangaroo family are also waiting. Schnitzel and Trüffel, the mini pigs, will steal your heart.
Rolf’s Streichelzoo is located on Tulpenweg in Cologne-Zündorf. It is open to visitors. There are special winter visiting hours until February 28th. On weekdays, it’s open from 10 AM to 5 PM. Saturdays are 10 AM to 4 PM. It is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Remember that the last entry is one hour before closing. Admission is 3 euros for adults and teens over 14. Children pay 2 euros. Kids under 2 and birthday children get in free.
