Siebert Irving Strayer started it all in Baltimore. His goal was to teach business skills to former farm workers. Shorthand, typing and accounting were among the first courses.
In 1904, Strayer expanded to Washington, D.C. This city became the university’s headquarters. Strayer’s growth mirrored the country’s needs. The Revenue Act of 1913 created a demand for trained accountants. World War I increased the need for government clerks. These clerks needed office skills.
Strayer’s commitment to education evolved over the years. In the 1930s, it gained the right to grant collegiate degrees. By 1959, Strayer Junior College was founded. This allowed the college to confer two-year degrees. In 1969, Strayer College received accreditation. It could then offer four-year Bachelor of Arts degrees.
The 1980s and 90s were a period of rapid growth for Strayer College. Enrollment soared from 1,800 in 1981 to 9,000 by 1997. The college broadened its curriculum. Data processing and health care management were added. In 1987, Strayer gained approval to grant Master of Science degrees.
The rise of computers led Strayer to focus on information technology courses. Companies like AT&T and government agencies like the IRS needed computer training. In 1996, Strayer Online was launched. This allowed students to take classes via the Internet. In 1998, Strayer College became Strayer University.
The 21st century brought further expansion for Strayer University. Campuses opened outside the Washington metropolitan area. Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee welcomed Strayer. Today, Strayer has campuses in fifteen states and Washington, D.C..
Strayer University is known for serving working adults. It offers undergraduate and graduate degrees. Accounting, business administration, and criminal justice are popular programs. Strategic Education, Inc. oversees Strayer University. This publicly-traded holding company was established in 1996. In 2018, it merged with Capella University. Strategic Education, Inc. continues to support Strayer’s mission.
