Across the shimmering waters, Stora Maren beckons. This isn’t just a body of water. It’s a stage where Sodermalje’s story unfolds. Stora Maren is the heart of Sodermalje, a place of historical significance and cultural importance. For years, Marenplan and the area around Stora Maren have been a beloved spot for locals and visitors. The square, the bridge, and even the quay itself whisper tales of bygone eras. But time takes its toll. The old quay struggles to support large gatherings. The square and bridge show signs of wear. Stora Maren deserves a revitalization, a transformation into the city’s vibrant front. Imagine a flexible square, alive with people. Picture a space that adapts effortlessly from daily life to grand events. Envision a stage where music and laughter fill the air. This is the vision for Stora Maren. A new era is dawning, one of renewed energy and accessibility. The plan includes a new bridge, designed for both pedestrians and cyclists. The possibility of opening the inner Maren to boats adds another layer of excitement. The old McDonalds building will be reborn, housing a hotel and public spaces. The transformation of Stora Maren began in 2014. Initial plans focused on creating a greener space. However, the site’s condition required a more ambitious approach. Guided by the 2016 program, technical investigations paved the way for detailed planning and implementation. The adoption of the Tellus 5 and Marenplan detailed plan in early 2023 marked a significant milestone. Now, the revitalization of the quays and Marenplan can begin. The future of Stora Maren is bright, promising a dynamic and engaging space for generations to come.
