What secrets lie beneath the earth’s surface? Right here at the entrance to Štola Josef, you might feel a shiver of anticipation. Štola Josef is no ordinary mine. This tunnel, carved into the earth near Slapy Dam, once hummed with the pursuit of gold. Today, it echoes with a different kind of excitement: the pursuit of knowledge. In the 1980s miners dug almost 8 kilometers of tunnels here searching for gold. But nature guards her treasures closely and the mine closed in 1991. The Czech Technical University in Prague saw an opportunity in the silence of the abandoned mine. In 2007, they transformed a section of Štola Josef, about 6 kilometers, into an underground laboratory. Students and researchers now descend into this subterranean world to study geotechnics, geology, and materials engineering. It’s a unique space, offering a hands-on learning experience unlike any other in Europe. While the quest for gold may be over, Štola Josef remains a testament to human curiosity. It reminds us that discovery takes many forms, from unearthing precious metals to unlocking the mysteries of the earth itself.
