The name may sound like a mouthful, but it’s a story of transformation. Stodůlky, a simple farming village, has become a buzzing hub of Prague’s southwest. Stodůlky’s history stretches back to the 12th century, when it was just a few small barns – its name actually means “little barns.” Imagine this small village surrounded by fields, only to witness its transformation just a few decades ago! This originally agrarian community experienced a dramatic change in the 1960s. It wasn’t a sudden shift, however, it was a gradual rise of housing complexes and the emergence of a bustling urban district that is what Stodůlky is today. The old barns might be gone, but their legacy still whispers through the name of the area. The large apartment complexes of Jihozápadní Město (Southwestern City) sprang up like mushrooms after a spring rain. Today, Stodůlky is the most populated cadastral area in all of Prague, and it has an unusual mix of modern architecture and a few hidden pieces of the old village’s history. Stodůlky truly embodies how the city of Prague has evolved to become the sprawling metropolitan centre it is today.
