Did the name ‘Stellenberg’ ever strike you as curious? Here we stand before the Stellenberg Dutch Reformed Church, a landmark in its own right, but its name echoes a much broader tale. The church, established on August 2nd, 1971, carries the name of the suburb it calls home. Stellenberg itself inherited its moniker from a historic farm. That original farm, Stellenburgh, later Stellenburg, offered a clear view of the Stellenbosch Mountain, inspiring Johannes Blesius to christen it thusly in 1705. Can you picture him, standing on this very ground centuries ago, gazing towards that distant peak? Now, fast forward to 1971. The Stellenberg Dutch Reformed Church emerged from the Durbanville congregation, a necessary division due to the latter’s burgeoning size. The church found its permanent home here on May 3rd, 1975, in the heart of the growing Stellenberg suburb. The cornerstone, a symbol of new beginnings, was unveiled by Reverend JJC Visser. In 1995, the Stellenberg Dutch Reformed Church further cemented its community role by pioneering the annual Fest Market, a lively tradition that continues to this day between late October and mid-November. From a farm with a mountain view to a thriving suburban church, the name “Stellenberg” connects us to a rich past while embracing the present.
