During World War II, Mattioni served in the military. He was sent to Yugoslavia and Africa. In Tunisia, English forces captured him. He was held in a camp in Egypt until 1946. After the war, he received the Croce al Merito di Guerra. He then returned to his job at Aquila. He stayed there until retirement.

Mattioni’s work explores everyday life. His characters are ordinary people. They are immersed in a timeless reality. This reality is often foreign to them.
