Hidden in plain sight, the Stegenturm stands as a silent sentinel. This unassuming tower holds centuries of Heidingsfeld’s history. The Stegenturm whispers tales of a time when walls defined safety and towers meant vigilance. Built in the 14th century as part of Heidingsfeld’s city walls, the Stegenturm played a crucial role in the city’s defense. Its 16-meter height offered a commanding view of the surrounding area, allowing guards to spot approaching enemies. Imagine a time before modern technology. The Stegenturm, with its strategic location overlooking the Zwischengemüerbach stream, provided early warning against any approaching threat. This tower wasn’t just a random placement. It was a carefully planned part of Heidingsfeld’s defense, working in concert with other fortifications like the Salmannsturm. Both were robust round towers, capped with conical roofs, standing as guardians against potential attacks. The Stegenturm, like many historical structures, has faced its share of challenges. The ravages of war left their mark in 1945. Yet, the city’s dedication to preserving its heritage led to the Stegenturm’s meticulous reconstruction, completed around 1978/79. For a period, the Stegenturm stood empty, a silent testament to its past. Then, in 2011, it underwent a much-needed renovation, breathing new life into this ancient structure. The Stegenturm’s name itself holds a clue to its location. The name “Turm am Steg,” or “Tower at the Bridge,” refers to the “Döle” or small bridge that once spanned the Heigelsbach stream nearby. Today, the Stegenturm’s legacy continues. It gives its name to the Stegenturmgasse, a street in Heidingsfeld. The Stegenturm stands as a proud reminder of Heidingsfeld’s resilient past. It’s a must-see for anyone who wants to delve into the heart of Würzburg’s history.
