“A bridge of many names,” you might say, standing here before the Štefánikův most. Indeed, this sturdy structure has seen its fair share of titles over the years. The Štefánikův most gracefully links the bustling Revoluční třída, marking the edge of Prague’s Old and New Towns, with the quieter Letná Tunnel on the opposite bank. Constructed between 1949 and 1951, the bridge we see today replaced an older structure, the Emperor Franz Joseph I Bridge. Although that bridge boasted an impressive design, it struggled to keep pace with Prague’s burgeoning traffic. Sadly, it was dismantled, its metal repurposed for the war effort. Today’s Štefánikův most, crafted from reinforced concrete, stands as a testament to resilience and progress. Its three segmented arches stretch across the Vltava, a study in strength and functionality. Look closely, and you’ll notice a fascinating detail. During its construction, the builders utilized a pioneering technique, employing scaffolding made from steel pipes for the first time. The Štefánikův most, though a bridge of many names, remains a constant in Prague’s ever-evolving landscape. It bears silent witness to the city’s rich history, silently carrying its citizens and visitors across the Vltava.
