“Three sandstone gun emplacements” That’s how Steele Point Gun Emplacement began. It stands proudly on the shores of Port Jackson in Vaucluse a small fort with a big history. Construction of Steele Point Gun Emplacement started in 1871. It was finished in 1874. Additional barracks were added in 1880. The colonial architect James Barnet oversaw its design. He designed other harbour fortifications too.

Steele Point’s creation reflected anxieties. Fears of a Russian attack spurred its building. Concerns about British troop withdrawals also played a role. The fort became part of a larger Sydney Harbour defence system. This included Middle Head Fortifications Georges Head Battery and others.

Originally Steele Point held three 80-pounder rifled muzzle-loading guns. Later it was rearmed with three 5-inch breech-loading guns. The emplacement itself was ingenious. Three sandstone pits formed the gun emplacements. These were linked by open and covered passages. Underground chambers housed gunpowder a shell and artillery store. Living quarters for the soldiers were also present. A picket fence with a sandstone base and barbed wire enhanced security. A jetty and connecting roads completed the site.

Today much of Steele Point is buried. Passageways tunnels and storage areas are partially underground. Damage from water seepage has affected the interior. One gun emplacement however remains above ground. It is a testament to the fort’s resilience. The land was granted to New South Wales in 1980. It’s now under the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service. A small part is used by the Royal Australian Navy. The wider area is Heritage Listed as Nielsen Park. Steele Point became known as Steele Point in 1993.

Steele Point Gun Emplacement silently tells stories. It whispers tales of anxieties and preparations. It recalls a time of potential conflict. It represents Australia’s determination to defend its shores. This unassuming fort stands as a potent symbol of a nation’s history and heritage. The fort’s past is palpable. Its future is secure. It stands as a significant landmark in Sydney’s story.
