What could be a quieter, more peaceful place to experience the history of Prague than Starý Brázdim? It feels like a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the Old Town. This little village was once a place of fierce battles and powerful families. It’s nestled in a valley, a secret tucked away, with its peaceful charm. Looking at the sleepy houses and the quiet street, it’s hard to imagine the centuries of history that have unfolded here. But just imagine the stories the walls could tell. They’ve whispered of the early lords of the land, the Benešovský family, who ruled these lands in the 14th century. Tales of brave knights and fierce rivalries, of battles fought and won, and of the rise and fall of fortunes.
The Starý Brázdim you see today is a blend of the old and the new. The original fortifications of the village predate 1000 AD. The village is mentioned in a founding document of the Boleslavský Chapter in 1052, under the rather odd name “Prisnin”. Back then, this district comprised two fortresses and a few modest houses. But its history stretches back even further.
The foundations of these fortresses, those two powerful walls, tell of a turbulent past. The old village was once home to proud and tenacious people. They carved out their lives under the watchful eyes of powerful lords, the Benedictine Monastery to the south and the Boleslavský bishops to the north. They witnessed the arrival of settlers, the arrival of new ideas, and they endured the wrath of invaders and the ravages of war. The village’s story is intertwined with the history of Prague itself.
Let your imagination run wild. In your mind’s eye, see the fields, the simple homes, and the families who lived here during the Thirty Years’ War. Starý Brázdim was a place where the echo of war’s devastation reverberated long after the fighting had ended. After the battle of White Mountain in 1620, where Bohemian Protestants were defeated, the village faced hard times. The war left its scars on the land, in the form of abandoned farms and fields.
The village, however, survived. Like the old tree that still stands here, silently witnessing the passage of time, Starý Brázdim slowly recovered. The villagers rebuilt their homes and re-cultivated their fields. They found a new way of life after the war, and the village once again became a thriving community, welcoming generations of new families.
Today, Starý Brázdim continues to thrive. This peaceful little village is now a part of the wider Brázdim commune. The people who call this place home are proud of their history and their heritage. And they continue to write the next chapter of its story. So, enjoy the tranquility of walking through the heart of this village, and imagine the stories that have shaped its rich and vibrant history.
