Shrouded in history and shadowed by tales of both resilience and despair, Stanley Prison stands before us. This imposing structure, established in January 1937 as Hong Kong Prison at Stanley, has witnessed a tumultuous past. Stanley Prison isn’t merely a correctional facility. It’s a living testament to Hong Kong’s complex history. Originally designed to hold 1,500 prisoners, Stanley Prison quickly became overcrowded. During the Japanese occupation, the grounds transformed into a brutal internment camp, housing over 3,000 people. The prison became a stage for unspeakable acts, including the execution of Mateen Ansari, whose bravery earned him a posthumous George Cross. After the war, Stanley Prison resumed its function as a correctional facility. It served as a place of execution until 1966, with the last hanging occurring in November of that year. While the death penalty wasn’t officially abolished in Hong Kong until 1993, the gallows at Stanley Prison fell silent. This area now houses the prison’s hospital, a poignant transformation. Today, Stanley Prison remains one of six maximum security institutions in Hong Kong. It houses male adult convicted and remand prisoners. A visit to the nearby Hong Kong Correctional Services Museum provides further insights. It unveils a collection of artifacts that weave together the story of crime, punishment, and rehabilitation in Hong Kong. Stanley Prison’s imposing walls have confined notorious figures like Rurik Jutting, Chan Man-lok, and Leung Wai-lun. As we stand here, let us acknowledge the weight of the stories contained within Stanley Prison. It reminds us of the resilience of the human spirit even in the face of adversity.
