Born in Warsaw in 1901 Stanisław Wigura’s name marks this path. Wigura’s story is one of passion innovation and tragic loss.
From a young age Wigura was captivated by mechanics and aviation. During the Polish-Soviet War in 1920 he volunteered for the 8th Field Artillery Regiment showing his dedication to his country. After the war Wigura pursued his passion for engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology. It was here that he met Stanisław Rogalski and Jerzy Drzewiecki forming a team that would revolutionize Polish aviation.
The three formed the RWD team an acronym of their surnames. Wigura’s expertise lay in initial design calculations and development. In 1928 the team constructed their first sports plane RWD-1. Wigura graduated from Warsaw Tech in 1929. He also earned his pilot’s license the same year.
The RWD team achieved greater success with the RWD-2 and RWD-4 planes. These aircraft were used in Polish sports aviation. Wigura’s piloting skills grew through his friendship with Franciszek Żwirko. Żwirko an experienced pilot became Wigura’s mentor. Together they flew often with Wigura as mechanic and second pilot. In 1929 Żwirko and Wigura flew an RWD-2 prototype across Europe covering 5000 kilometers. They won a Polish air race that same year.
In 1932 Wigura and Żwirko entered the International Tourist Plane Competition flying the RWD-6. They faced tough competition from German teams. Żwirko’s piloting and the RWD-6’s performance secured them victory. They became national heroes.
Tragedy struck on September 11 1932. Wigura and Żwirko were en route to an air meet in Prague. A storm caused their RWD-6 to crash near Cieszyn killing both men. Wigura was only 31. His work had already left a lasting mark on Polish aviation.
Stanisław Wigura was posthumously awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He also received the Polish Gold Cross of Merit. His contributions to aviation and his partnership with Żwirko remain legendary.
