Why is it called Stallkirche, the Church in the Stable? You might be surprised to hear that the Stallkirche here in Westerland, Sylt, was once a humble stable. Let’s step back in time to 1948. A Danish community blossomed on the island. They needed a place of worship. A charming 1780s Frisian farmhouse became their pastorate in 1952. Imagine holding services in schoolhouses. That’s what the community did, scattered across Sylt! Finally, in 1976, they converted the stable next door into a church. It became the heart of this Danish island community. The high entrance, a reminder of its past, once welcomed hay wagons. Today it welcomes worshippers into the cozy Stallkirche. The church itself is simple, adorned with a communion rail like other Scandinavian churches. Look closely and you’ll see the six-register organ from 1993. Notice the bell tower added three years later. This quirky stable-turned-church embodies the resilience and spirit of Sylt’s Danish community.
