“This very spot” I begin “has witnessed history unfold. Right here before you stands Stafford Courthouse.”

Stafford Courthouse isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to Stafford County’s rich past. The current structure dates back to the 1920s. It stands near the route Revolutionary War troops took. Think of Washington and Rochambeau’s army. They marched right through here.

The courthouse has a dramatic Civil War history. Sickles’ brigade raided it in 1862. Many documents were damaged or stolen. Union troops used it as headquarters and surrounded it in the winter of 1863. A pivotal meeting took place here in April 1863. President Lincoln and General Howard met here. That meeting led to Howard heading the Freedmen’s Bureau. This agency was crucial during Reconstruction. It helped found Howard University and Lincoln Memorial University.

Nearby a camp existed. In February 1863 Captain Robert Gould Shaw was offered command of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. This regiment of African American soldiers is famous thanks to the movie Glory. The courthouse’s very stones seem to whisper these stories. Imagine the soldiers marching by. Picture the weight of history. Feel the echoes of those fateful decisions.

Before the 1920s building there were earlier courthouses. Records show some court sessions took place in private homes. A public port was created in 1691. A town named Marlborough arose. The first courthouse was a simple wooden structure. It unfortunately burned down in 1715. The courthouse moved to Stone Landing. This was near Old Creek Side Road. It remained there until 1783. A more central location was needed as Stafford County grew westward. The current site was bought in 1783. A new courthouse was built in 1840. By 1922 it needed replacing. That’s why the current building stands proudly. It was updated and enlarged in 1992.

Stafford Courthouse stands not just as a courthouse. It is a symbol of perseverance. A place where justice was sought. It embodies the struggles and triumphs of a nation. It’s a place where history lives and breathes. Take a moment. Absorb the stories held within these walls. Stafford Courthouse awaits.
