On this bustling Mariahilfer Straße, the Stadtsaal stands as a testament to Vienna’s vibrant cultural scene. The Stadtsaal isn’t just a modern theater. It’s a place steeped in history, breathing new life into a former ballroom from 1870. Since its grand reopening on January 3, 2011, the Stadtsaal has become a beloved venue for cabaret, music, and literary events. Imagine the echoes of laughter and applause within these walls, now a stage for renowned Austrian and international artists. The Stadtsaal’s story begins much earlier than 2011. This very spot once housed the “Zum blauen Bock” inn, later known by various names like “Englischer Hof”, “Monopol”, “Savoy”, and finally “Münchner Hof”. Its ballroom hosted not only lively balls and concerts but also significant historical gatherings. In 1867, amidst the rise of the Viennese labor movement, a meeting was called here to establish a workers’ educational association. The response was overwhelming, with 3,000 people eager to participate. The ballroom, however, could not contain such a crowd. The meeting was adjourned and later held at Schwenders Kolosseum. Despite the change of venue, the date of the initial gathering, December 8th, is still recognized as the founding day of the “Arbeiterbildungsverein Gumpendorf.” The Stadtsaal carries this rich history within its walls. It now boasts a capacity of around 420 people. The Stadtsaal has hosted premieres of prominent Austrian comedians like Alfred Dorfer, Thomas Maurer, and Josef Hader. The venue’s design ensures an excellent viewing experience for all. Tiered seating, a raised section from the middle of the hall, and a balcony provide unobstructed views of the stage. The Stadtsaal also offers accessible seating and an inductive system for the hearing impaired, showcasing its commitment to inclusivity. And, you can even bring your drinks from the Stadtsaal bar into the performance hall. So, as you stand before the Stadtsaal, remember, it’s more than just a theater. It’s a living piece of Viennese history. A place where the echoes of the past mingle with the laughter and music of the present.
