“Lost in a good book?” a voice chuckled, snapping me back to the present. I blinked, realizing I was standing before the Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen, not in the world of the novel I’d been imagining. The Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen. A place where stories come alive, both within the pages of its vast collection and in the whispers of its own history. Established in 1910 as a humble “Volksbücherei” in a schoolhouse in Wiesdorf, the library has witnessed Leverkusen’s transformation. It has seen the merging of Bürrig and Wiesdorf, the granting of city rights, and even the tumultuous years of World War II. The Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen has been more than just a repository of books. It has been a reflection of the community, shaped by its needs and reflecting its values. In the 1920s, it played a role in combating “Schmutz und Schund,” or trashy literature, carefully curating its collection under the watchful eye of teacher Anton Lütter. The library even endured the ideological purges of 1933, its shelves cleared of “Marxist” and “anti-religious” books, replaced with volumes aligning with the prevailing national socialist thought. After the war, in 1946, the Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen reopened its doors, offering solace and knowledge amidst the ruins. It moved to the Doktorsburg in 1957 and then, embracing modernity, transformed into an open-access library in 1965, complete with a dedicated youth section. Growth necessitated further moves, first to the former Sparkassenhalle in 1972 and then, in 1998 and 2002, to expanded facilities within the Stadthaus. The library finally found its current home within the Rathaus-Galerie shopping center in 2010. Today, the Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen continues to thrive, offering a diverse collection of over 127,000 items, from factual books to novels, children’s literature to multimedia resources. It serves as a vital community hub, fostering learning and engagement through exhibitions, events, and even a Schülercenter, or student center. The Stadtbibliothek Leverkusen is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring power of stories and the community’s commitment to knowledge and cultural enrichment.
