Feel the roar. Imagine the thunderous applause echoing from the stands of the Stadion Miejski Legii Warszawa im Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego.

This isn’t just any stadium. This is a place steeped in history a living testament to the passion of Legia Warsaw fans and the legacy of Polish football. Built between 1927 and 1930 the original stadium saw its first match on August 9 1930. It hosted Legia Warsaw games for decades. Speedway races also took place here. Sadly World War II inflicted damage. The Red Army and Polish Army offensive in January 1945 further damaged the structure.

But even destruction couldn’t extinguish the spirit of this place. Post-war reconstruction saw the stadium reborn. Attendance records shattered as Legia triumphed winning Polish championships and qualifying for European cups. A remarkable 40 000 spectators filled the stands on September 19 1956 for a European Cup match against Slovan Bratislava. The 1960s brought significant modernization with a 25 000 seated capacity and artificial lighting. The speedway track though a vital part of the stadium’s past was eventually removed in 1987 to expand the football field.

By the mid-1990s the need for a new stadium became undeniable. Legia’s successes including Polish championships and UEFA appearances demanded a modern venue. The path to the new stadium however was far from smooth. Legal complexities surrounding the military-owned land caused significant delays. The acquisition by the City of Warsaw in 2002 was a crucial step forward.

Construction of the new Stadion Miejski Legii Warszawa im Marszałka Józefa Piłsudskiego began in November 2008. A two-stage process the renovation was a remarkable undertaking. Only a small portion of the original main building facade was kept. The stadium reopened in August 2010 initially with three stands. The final stand was completed in May 2011. The modern stadium designed by JSK Architekci boasts 31 103 seats. It meets UEFA Elite class standards allowing it to host Champions League semi-finals.
