Originally opened in the 1930s Stadion Markéta was an athletics ground. It became home to PSK Olymp Praha. Later AK Markéta Praha joined. Since 1959, Stadion Markéta has hosted international speedway events.
The stadium is home to the Speedway Grand Prix of Czech Republic since 1997. The speedway track is 353 metres long. Imagine the roar of the engines. Picture the skill of the riders as they navigate the turns. Each year the Luboš Tomíček Memorial takes place. It is named after the rider Luboš Tomíček Sr. This event attracts speedway fans from around the globe.
Let’s talk about AK Markéta Praha. This motorcycle speedway team is based right here in Prague. After World War II sports teams emerged. In 1953, a law dictated sports societies. Athletes were assigned based on their jobs. The speedway team was linked to the police force. It was first known as Rudá Hvězda Praha. This means Red Star Prague. After the fall of Real socialism the club changed its name. It became Olymp Praha. On July 9 1990 Autoklub Markéta at PSK Olymp Praha was created.
The team dominated Czechoslovakian speedway. They won 26 championships. They even had two teams in the top division. These were Olymp Praha A and Olymp Praha B. Another team Markéta competed in 1.Liga.
The team continued its police connection. They raced as PSK Olymp Praha. Later they were known as Olymp Praha again. They secured eight Extraliga titles from 1992 to 2003. In 2015, the club became AK Markéta Praha. In 2023 they were champions of the country.
In 2022, Stadion Markéta was the first venue for SGP2. In 2023, the stadium hosted rugby matches. These were part of the 2022–23 Rugby Europe International Championships.
