Nestled in Stuttgart’s Neckarpark is the Stadion Festwiese. This multi-purpose stadium has been a hub of athletic activity for nearly a century. Let’s uncover its story.
Initially, the area served as an exercise ground for nearby military barracks in the 1920s. Imagine soldiers marching and training here. Then came the German Gymnastics Festival in 1933. The Festwiese was transformed into a large open space. A wooden grandstand was built for the occasion.
Just a year later, the wooden grandstand was replaced. A new grandstand made of exposed concrete was erected. It even featured a press tower. In 1958, a roof was added to the grandstand providing shelter for spectators. The Stadion Festwiese hosted large police festivals and soccer games. Crowds of up to 10,000 people gathered here.
Fast forward to the early 2000s. The Mercedes-Benz Arena underwent renovations. It became a dedicated football stadium. This meant no more track and field events there. So, the Stadion Festwiese was chosen for a complete overhaul. From 2010 to July 2011, the stadium was modernized.
The renovation cost around 4.5 million euros. The Stadion Festwiese now boasts a new grandstand with 280 seats. A new functional building was added. This included changing rooms and sanitary facilities. The 400-meter running track was expanded. It went from six to eight lanes. Throwing and jumping facilities were also improved.
The grandstand was designed to be modular. It can be expanded to accommodate up to 2,000 seats. The stadium’s total capacity could potentially reach 10,000. In early 2014, the changing room building was extended. Two additional changing rooms with restrooms were added.
Today, the Stadion Festwiese is a key training center for track and field. It’s also part of the Olympic training center. Schools and clubs use it for training and events. The Stuttgart district of the Württemberg Athletics Association holds several sports festivals here annually. The stadium also hosts other sports like American football and soccer. Cultural events take place here too. The AFC Stuttgart Silver Arrows, an American football club, calls this stadium home.
