A new concrete main stand was built.
Venezia’s promotion to Serie A in 1939 brought further modernisation. The stadium grew larger. In 1966 a record 26000 spectators packed in to watch Venezia play Milan. A devastating tornado in 1971 caused severe damage. The stadium’s capacity plummeted to a mere 5000. The roar of the crowd was reduced to a whisper.
But Venezia’s spirit never broke. As the team rose through the leagues makeshift stands were added. In 1998 during another Serie A promotion it could hold almost 15000 fans. Safety regulations later reduced the capacity. The stadium fell into disrepair. Plans for a new stadium have been discussed. Progress however has been slow.
Today Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo still stands. Its location on Isola di Sant’Elena is unique. It’s a short walk from Piazza San Marco. Or you can take an ACTV boat. Lines 1 51 52 41 42 61 and 62 all go there. The journey from Piazza San Marco takes only about ten minutes.
Ticket prices range from €10 for the Curva Sud to €30 for a central seat. Buying tickets in advance saves a few Euros. You can buy tickets at a souvenir shop near the Doge’s Palace or at the stadium itself. Remember to bring identification.
