From molten metal to clinking coins, the Staatliche Münze Stuttgart has been shaping currency for centuries. Right here in Bad Cannstatt, this mint whispers tales of emperors, kings, and the ceaseless flow of money. The Staatliche Münze Stuttgart isn’t just a factory. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of currency. Founded way back in 1374, when Emperor Charles IV granted Count Eberhard II of Württemberg the right to mint coins, it became the main minting location in Württemberg. The mint’s first home was a small workshop near the marketplace and Old Castle in Stuttgart’s city center. Today, Münzstraße, or “Mint Street”, still echoes with the memory of those early days. The Staatliche Münze Stuttgart has seen its share of prominent visitors. In 1803 and 1804, Elector Frederick II visited, each time marking the occasion with a special commemorative ducat. King Wilhelm I also visited, in 1825 and again in 1844 at the mint’s new Neckarstraße location, each visit resulting in unique commemorative coins. The “F” mint mark, adopted after the founding of the German Empire in 1871, is a symbol of the Staatliche Münze Stuttgart’s legacy. It’s a mark you’ll find on about 40% of all German circulation coins, commemorative coins, and the exclusive annual 10-euro commemorative coin. Even today, this mint produces up to 2 million coins daily. The Staatliche Münze Stuttgart is a testament to the enduring link between history, craftsmanship, and the clink of coins in your pocket.
