The roar of a training exercise echoes across the grounds. This is the Staatliche Feuerwehrschule Würzburg. It’s not just a school. It’s a place where heroes are forged.
Established in 1949 the Staatliche Feuerwehrschule Würzburg initially lacked a permanent home. For five years firefighters trained in a repurposed building within the Faulenberg-Kaserne. This building a large brick structure from 1887-1888 was generously provided by the US Fire Chief. The American army even provided additional land for outdoor training. Two courses were offered: “Maschinist” and “Löschmeister”.
The school’s early years were marked by temporary arrangements. In 1952 the US Army ended the lease. The search for a new location began immediately. A solution was found the current site in Zellerau. Until 1954 new buildings were constructed. During this period a “mobile fire school” was deployed. An LF 15 fire engine served as a classroom driving throughout the region offering courses to local firefighters.
Over the decades the Staatliche Feuerwehrschule Würzburg expanded. New buildings were added. These included vehicle garages a training hall and in 1965 a staff building. The staff building underwent an expansion in 1977 connecting it to the main school building. A further expansion in 1989 brought more vehicle garages classrooms and a large breathing apparatus training center. The year 1996 saw more construction on the grounds of the former Hindenburg Kaserne.
By 2000 the Staatliche Feuerwehrschule Würzburg had become a state-of-the-art facility. The first fire training facility in Bavaria was opened. It provided multiple realistic fire scenarios for training. A modern administration building was added four years later. The school’s commitment to excellence is evident.
In 2012 construction began on a school-owned boat dock on the Main River. Opened in 2014 it provides essential training for water rescues. A 30-meter high training hall and a new fire station with twelve parking spaces were completed in 2016. The state of Bavaria invested 29.5 million euros in these projects. The state of Bavaria continues to invest in the school’s facilities. A new accommodation building with 50 beds is planned for completion by 2022.
Today the Staatliche Feuerwehrschule Würzburg stands as a testament to dedication. It’s a beacon of safety and preparedness. It’s more than a school it’s a legacy. A legacy of service and sacrifice. A legacy that continues to protect the people of Bavaria. And it all started with a single building and a dream of better training.
