What a magnificent sight St Ulrich’s Church is! This Baroque masterpiece stands proudly in Vienna’s 7th district. Its two towers reach towards the sky a testament to centuries of faith and resilience.

St Ulrich’s story begins long before its current impressive form. A humble chapel dedicated to St Ulrich stood on this very spot as early as 1211. Imagine the simple structure a stark contrast to the grandeur we see today. This first chapel served as the heart of a small village then known as Zeismannsbrunn.

Tragedy struck in 1473. A devastating storm caused the chapel’s roof to collapse killing the priest chaplain and thirty parishioners during mass. The rebuilt chapel met a similar fate during the First Siege of Vienna in 1529. The Ottoman army destroyed it along with countless other structures.

Yet the spirit of St Ulrich persevered. The church was rebuilt again. In 1589 St Ulrich became an independent parish. The Second Siege of Vienna in 1683 brought more destruction but the church was rebuilt yet again. Legend has it that the Turkish commander Kara Mustafa used St Ulrich’s tower as a vantage point to observe the siege.

The church we see today dates from 1721. Architect Josef Reymund designed this Baroque hall church. Its construction continued until 1724. Additional buildings were completed in 1752 and the towers in 1771. Notice the southern gable facade with its recessed towers. They originally featured onion helmets now replaced by tent roofs. The sculptor Franz Xaver Seegen created the stone figures flanking the main entrance. They depict Saints Benedict Ulrich Aloysius and Johannes Nepomuk. He also sculpted the St Ulrich figure on the facade. Admire the stunning altarpiece. Paul Troger painted it in 1750. It depicts St Ulrich’s vision at the Battle of Lechfeld.

The church also has a rich musical history. Schubert’s Mass No 4 was performed here in 1825. The organ a neoclassical masterpiece dates from 1842. It underwent restoration in 1979.

St Ulrich’s Church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Vienna. It stands as a silent observer of centuries of history a beacon of hope and a place of peace. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the history of St Ulrich’s Church. It is a true gem in the heart of Vienna.
