Isn’t it peculiar how architecture can reflect beliefs? The St. Thomas-Morus-Kirche embodies this. Constructed between 1962 and 1963, this church, designed by Fritz Schaller, is relatively young. It’s dedicated to the English Saint Thomas More. Now, look at the church’s most striking feature: the massive gable window shaped like a triangle. This symbolizes the Trinity, a core tenet of Catholicism. The building itself is an architectural marriage of modern and traditional styles. The St. Thomas-Morus-Kirche boasts a unique steeple that resembles a helmet. This “helmet” rises from the ground, connected to the main building by a low structure. Adding to the eclectic design, a parish hall designed as an octagon was added in 1984. Inside, you’ll find two altars crafted by Elmar Hillebrand, who also designed the tabernacle and baptismal font. Notice the Marienkapelle within the tower’s ground floor. It houses a beautiful Madonna from the early Gothic period. Interestingly, the church features a four-part bronze bell ensemble cast in 1969 by Hans Hüesker at the Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock bell foundry in Gescher. Each bell is named: Raphael, Anna, Juliana, and of course, Thomas Morus. The St. Thomas-Morus-Kirche’s blend of styles mirrors the evolving nature of faith, constantly adapting while staying true to its core.
